The metre-square portrait, in oils, was originally presented to Pinter by his teammates at Gaieties Cricket Club as a mark of their esteem and gratitude for his 40 years service. Pinter, one of the most influential playwrights of his generation, liked the portrait so much that he gave it pride of place in his study, telling artist Joe Hill: “On the evidence of this painting, I should have opened the batting for England!” The portrait is being auctioned to raise money for The Lord’s Taverners, one of the UK’s leading youth sports and disability charities, to help give disadvantaged youngsters the opportunity to play cricket, a cause close to Harold’s heart. The winner will be announced at a Pinter tribute event at Lord’s on 27 September following a celebrity cricket match between a Lord’s Taverners XI, captained by the former England skipper Mike Brearley, and a Gaieties XI. Actor Harry Burton, Pinter’s close friend and Gaieties teammate, said “Harold was a passionate cricket fan and a supporter of charities like The Lord’s Taverners which help give young people access to sport and recreational activities. He would be delighted to know that the portrait will help give youngsters from disadvantaged backgrounds the opportunity to play cricket.” Matthew Patten, Chief Executive of The Lord’s Taverners “Harold Pinter was a huge cricket fan and great supporter of The Lord’s Taverners. This is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate one of this country’s great playwrights and help raise funds for disadvantaged youngsters.”

Colin Firth's one-man British Invasion By Bob Thompson, Canwest News ServiceJune 11, 2009 9:01 AM NEW YORK - Variety is the spice of Colin Firth's movie life and he wants to keep it that way. So when Firth's accused of always playing a variation on the uptight Brit, he shrugs off the criticism. "I think cinema, to put it most politely, works in archetypes and not stereotypes," says the 48-year-old actor. "I think it's really a part of the currency in cinema." Whether he's repetitive or not, there's no question Firth lends credibility to whatever project he signs up for. Mind you, in his three movies this year, he can't help himself. The films are based on 'veddy British' stories. Currently, he's co-starring in the ensemble film version of Noel Coward's play Easy Virtue. In the 1920s Coward parlour comedy, Firth plays the henpecked Brit country gentleman who's bemused by his son's (Ben Barnes) recent marriage to a sassy American blond (Jessica Biel) and frustrated by his scolding and snobby wife (Kristin Scott Thomas). Later this year, Firth can bee seen as the manipulative Lord Henry opposite Barnes in Dorian Gray, the movie version of Oscar Wilde's novel The Picture of Dorian Gray. "We really have been seeing too much of each other," notes a smiling Firth, referring to his Easy Virtue co-star Barnes. Then Firth portrays Fred in Robert Zemeckis' fancy motion-capture 3D film version of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol, which opens in November. In it, Jim Carrey plays Ebenezer Scrooge and the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future. Gary Oldman defines Jacob Marley, Bob Cratchit and Tiny Tim. "And I get Fred," reports the self-deprecating Firth. "Not only do I play just one character, Fred is that guy (nobody) quite remembers who is the kind and generous nephew to Scrooge and the only living relative." Overcoming the motion-capture suit and bare sets were technical difficulties, but Firth says "once you get accustomed to the strange atmosphere, the performance is more like theatre than film," which was fine for him and his English background on the stage. Born in the Hampshire town of Grayshott, England, he had a strict childhood. Three of his four grandparents were Methodist missionaries. His father took a job as a history teacher at King Alfred's College in Winchester. His mother became a comparative-religion lecturer at Open University. Somehow, acting became a focus when he showed some early potential, realized as he rose in the ranks of the Royal Shakespeare Company before making his break out in the West End's Another Country, which evolved into his film debut when a movie of the play was released in 1984. Two years later, he held his own opposite Laurence Olivier in the TV adaptation of J.B. Priestley's novel Lost Empires and followed that up with the high-profile co-starring role alongside Kenneth Branagh in film version of J.L. Carr's novel A Month in the Country. He even played the title role in the 1989 movie Valmont, but he was an unknown quantity outside of Britain. That changed with his acclaimed Mr. Darcy role in the 1995 British teleplay of Pride and Prejudice, followed by portrayals in 1996's The English Patient and 1998's Shakespeare in Love, which gave him recognition in North America. Then there was his breakout success in Bridget Jones's Diary in 2001 and the 2004 sequel with Renee Zellweger and Hugh Grant. His casting was hardly a coincidence, and a cheeky in-joke. In the books, Bridget Jones's author, Helen Fielding, described her Mark Darcy as the Colin Firth type, the guy that played the very English Darcy in Pride and Prejudice. By the time Mamma Mia! came along last summer, he was an in-demand international actor with a bit of clout. And, indeed, he would return for a Mamma Mia! sequel if asked. That musical featuring Meryl Streep broke records, bringing in more than half a billion dollars. "I'm not conscious of any shift in strategy for me or anything like that in my world," Firth says. "It's nice as it comes. But Mamma Mia! or A Christmas Carol is really no more Hollywood than the Bridget Jones' movies." So there's no master plan for Firth to make the transition to big studio films any time soon. "I'm too lazy," he says. "At some point, I don't feel the need to be on a film set." Although, surprisingly enough, he adopts a method style of getting into his characters. "I actually do like to immerse myself in whatever I can, whatever the character's pathology is just for my own interest as much as anything else," Firth says. That's been his approach almost from the very beginning, and especially in the 1987 movie A Month in the Country in which he played a First World War veteran trying to adjust.
